Cuero, Edna Football Start Pre-Season Practice
Gobblers Return Eight Starters, Cowboys 15
Cuero, Texas —
Texas high school football pre-season practice, getting underway in several places in the area Monday morning.
At 7:24 Monday morning, I was at Gobbler Stadium for the first day of Cuero football pre-season practice. The Mean Green, the defending State 4A Division II champs, with four offensive and four defensive starters returning. Linebacker Austin Schwarz, the only skill position starter coming back after the Gobblers lose 28 lettermen to graduation. I talked with State championship head coach Travis Reeve.
“It’s an exciting time. First day of football season. This team has been working since January in off-season and throughout the summer. Now we get an opportunity to get our season officially kicked off and it’s an exciting time. Now is when we begin to evaluate our players and put together our football team. This is what our first few weeks is all about. We’re really excited about the players we have and feel like we have a lot of good players.”
Cuero football’s first pre-season scrimmage, a week from this Friday at Canyon Lake.
My second Monday morning stop for high school football practice day one, Cowboy Country.
I was at Cowboys Memorial Stadium as Edna football opened pre-season workouts. It was the Cowboys first workout under new head coach Robert Draper, who was promoted from offensive coordinator. Edna has eight offensive and seven defensive starters back, with 18 returning lettermen from a 12-2 team that made it to the regional finals. I talked with Robert Draper.
“First day’s been really good so far. Kids have a lot of energy. They seem really focused and excited about the new year and the possibilities we have. We’ve been in this system now for three years and we hadn’t changed a lot of coaches. I haven’t been able to coach the coaches to be able to coach the kids. The kids have been in the system for three years now. They know, they’re familiar with it. Now we can be a little bit more diverse in the slot-T than what we have been in the past. It’ll be more exciting and more advantageous to us as the year progresses. We can do some more advanced things since the kids have been in the system the past three years.”
Edna football’s first pre-season scrimmage comes a week from this Friday in Sealy. The Cowboys will take on Sealy and Columbus.
