Cuero, Edna Football Players Look To Big Seasons 8-7

Gobblers, Cowboys Are State-Ranked

Two area high school football teams have high hopes for 2019.
Cuero football aims to look ahead to the 2019 season..
The Mean Green, the defending state 4A Division II champs, with four offensive and four defensive starters returning. Linebacker Austin Schwarz, the only skill position starter coming back after the Gobblers lose 28 lettermen to graduation. Cuero defensive end Kobe Giles told me when he and his teammates started focusing on this season.

“Since day one we started talking that this is a whole new team. Same neighborhood, different house. That’s what we do.”

Cuero football’s first pre-season scrimmage, a week from this Friday at Canyon Lake.

Edna football has a new head coach, Robert Draper, who was promoted from offensive coordinator. Edna has eight offensive and seven defensive starters back, with 18 returning lettermen from a 12-2 team that made it to the regional finals. I talked with Edna tight end Malachi Brigham on how excited the Cowboys are to start the season.

“It’s a big deal. Everyone’s pumped trying to do better than last year. Hopefully fix up some things that will let us go even further.”
Edna football’s first pre-season scrimmage comes a week from this Friday in Sealy. The Cowboys will take on Sealy and Columbus.
