CUERO, Texas – Christian Burdick, of Cuero, received a text message on Tuesday night that changed his summer plans for the better.

Burdick was at work when he received a text message notifying him of his selection to tour with the Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps. Through this opportunity, he will join other musicians from across the U.S. and perform at different locations across the country.

‘I’m honestly blessed’

“I’m honestly blessed to have this opportunity because like I said, it was unexpected,” said Burdick. “I was already packed and ready to go to Kingsville for a camp that my band was taking me to.”

Christian, a soon-to-be senior at Cuero High School, plays the euphonium for the Cuero Gobbler Band. He also plays the trombone for the Swingin Gobbler Jazz Band and the guitar for the El Mariachi Orgullo Verde.

Burdick held the position of Drum Major his sophomore year, and he will return to that position for his senior year. According to Burdick’s mom, Vivian Potter, he ranked ninth in Texas for the euphonium and 13th for trombone. He also placed 3rd in Area for Jazz.

Christian joined the Cuero Gobbler Band his 6th-grade year and advanced to the marching band his 7th-grade year. In the last five to six years, he is the first band member selected to join the Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps summer tour.

According to the Cuero Gobbler Band Director, Richard Varela, Burdick will travel on a tour bus for approximately a month and a half. He will perform at different locations across the United States, including the Alamodome in San Antonio, 100 Montana St., on July 23.

‘Dedicated, hard-working student’

“He is a very dedicated, hard-working student, and he is one of our top players in our program,” said Varela. “He is one of the top players in the state for 4A and in recent years, he has done well in competitions.”

Varela expressed the overwhelming support from the community and school district in all programs.

“The community supports us in everything we do,” said Varela.
