Critical Race Theory VISD
Limitations for Texas educators to teach critical race theory in public schools.
After a long debate at the Texas Senate in May, a new version of House Bill 39-79 passed that would limit Texas educators to teach critical race theory in public schools. This bill “will limit” what educators can teach about race and ethnicity.
What is critical race theory? Critical race theory recognizes that systemic racism is part of American Society. Some do not agree with critical race theory being taught in schools.
Associate professor of political science Craig Goodman at the University of Houston Victoria explains there’s a perception among some conservatives that critical race theory downplays certain elements of traditional history in the United States.
“Then again, there’s been quote of a conflict, legislature had it illustrates some of the divides. You have places like Victoria that remain more conservative. In a lot of way.”Recently, Governor Abbott signed house bill 24-97 which centers on the year Texas won independence from Mexico and it’s meant to promote patriotic education in the state.
The governor said in quote on social media – “we’ll keep our rich history alive.”
