Corpus Christi restaurateur speaks in support of oyster bills at public hearing

VICTORIA, Texas – Nine house members of the Texas House Committee on Culture, Recreation and Tourism along with District 30 State Representative Geanie Morrison held a hearing about two oyster bills at the Victoria Emerging Technology Complex Thursday.

House Bill 2321 protects against illegal harvesting of undersized oysters and House Bill 1300 allows for oyster aquaculture. Brad Lomax, owner of WaterStreet Restaurants in Corpus Christi spoke in support of the two bills.

“I want to start a two to three acre farm as soon as possible and I want to grow enough oysters that I can provide my restaurants and I can do that,” Lomax said.

Sharon McBreen, an outreach officer for the Pew Charitable Trust, also spoke at the hearing and advised the committee to look to oyster preservation efforts in Alabama as a model for the Texas coast.
