Jaguars' Wilks named RRAC Defensive Player of the Year

VICTORIA,Texas– Connagh Wilks has been a force on the defensive side of the game most of the season for the University of Houston-Victoria men’s soccer team and he was rewarded for his play this week being named the Red River Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Wilks was one of eight UHV players honored with recognition of the 2020 RRAC all-conference team released on Wednesday.

UHV’s Karlo Lopez was named the RRAC Newcomer of the Year, while head coach Adrian Rigby for the second straight year was named the RRAC Coach of the Year.

Joining Wilks and Lopez on the first team were senior goalkeeper Gian Marco Cordoba and senior midfielder Oliver Nugent, both repeat selections, along with senior defender Brandon Watts.

Recognized on the second team were senior Adrian Rodriguez and sophomore Sebastian Leal, while junior Winner Assi was selected to the honorable mention team.

Jacob Collen was named to the conference’s Champions of Character team.

Wilks helped the Jaguars compile an 8-1-1 record on the year and win the RRAC regular season title with a perfect 6-0 record. He tallied one goal and had two assists on the year.

Lopez led the Jaguars with six goals and two assists for 14 points, while taking 18 shots, including nine on goal. He finished with two game-winning goals.

Matthew Alvarado of the University of the Southwest was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Three Jaguars named to All-RRAC team

Three members of the University of Houston-Victoria women’s soccer team earned honorable mention all-conference honors this week on the 2020 Red River Athletic Conference women’s soccer team.

Recognized were seniors Hayden Janner and Consuelo Luna and freshman Estelle Flanagan. Janner and Luna are both midfielders and Flanagan is a forward on the team.

The trio combined for 24 shots, including 15 shots on goal this season for the Jaguars. Flanagan finished with two goals.

Janner was also recognized on the conference’s Champion of Character team.
