Post Commander Lazaro Camarillo, III, of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, presented the Mayor with the proclamation from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Department of Texas (DOT) and the Purple Heart sign.

YOAKUM, Texas – The City of Yoakum is now a Purple Heart City as of Monday, May 30.

A Purple Heart City means to honor and remember military personnel wounded or killed in combat with hostile forces. It is specifically a combat decoration.

In 1782, General George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit, now known as the Purple Heart City. It is the nation’s oldest military medal.

The Yoakum City Council adopted a proclamation acknowledging their community as a Purple Heart City in support of their military personnel.

Post Commander Lazaro Camarillo, III, of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, presented the Mayor with the proclamation from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Department of Texas (DOT). He also presented the City’s mayor with the Purple Heart sign.
