City Council to consider dog park construction contract during Tuesday’s meeting
The dog park will be located in Riverside Park, near The PumpHouse
VICTORIA, Texas – The Victoria City Council will consider whether to approve a construction contract for a new dog park in Riverside Park at its Nov. 15 meeting. If the council approves the contract with By Grace Floors & Construction, construction will begin within a month and take about six months to complete.
The Parks & Recreation Commission approved the design for the dog park earlier this year. The dog park’s location will be at the southern end of the park, near The PumpHouse. Features of the park will include:
- Separate areas for large and small dogs
- Exercise equipment
- Drinking fountains for humans and dogs
- Smaller fenced-off areas for dogs who need a break
- Additional parking nearby
The dog park is part of the goals outlines in the Parks & Recreation master plan. During the community input phase, residents wrote in a dog park as one of the facilities they would like to see. The master plan also identified Riverside Park as a suitable location due to its size, regional park status and acceptable distance from residential areas.
Izzy Drane’s contribution
The City partnered with local Girl Scout Izzy Drane on the project. According to a press release from the City of Victoria, Izzy passed away this year. She had been raising funds and collecting sponsorships for exercise equipment within the dog park. This fundraiser was part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project.
Girl Scout Troop #9565 and Izzy’s family have continued to fundraise for the dog park in her memory. You can make a donation or donate to dedicate a brick in honor of a pet by visiting https://form.jotform.com/213536887304158.
The Victoria Sales Tax Development Corporation, which allocates sales tax revenue for community development projects, will provide additional funding for the project.
