Calhoun Senior Softball Girls Fall to New Mexico

The Calhoun senior softball girls fell to New Mexico, 7-5, in their second game at Regionals in Vidalia, Louisiana. The summer state champs beat Mississippi 3-2 on Saturday and will look to bounce back tomorrow when they play Louisiana at 6 pm. The senior league girls are representing Texas after claiming the Section 4 senior league title with a win over Channelview in Seguin last week. The 13-16 year old girls are 5-1 overall in this summer’s playoffs.

“It means a lot,” standout pitcher Haley Contreras said before the team left for Louisiana. “It took a lot of time for us to get used to each other. We weren’t used to each other at all. Now we’re all really close and we have fun.”

Contreras turned heads with her first start in the tournament, striking out 16 batters against just two hits in the opener against Mississippi to claim the victory for Calhoun.

The Calhoun senior team won back to back State titles in 2015 and 2016, with two of the players on those teams — Kelsey Tidrick and Lexi Carbajal — now suiting up for the UHV Jaguars.
