Calhoun beats West 61-28
VICTORIA, Texas — Calhoun’s high octane offense from a season ago appears to be alive and well.
The Sandcrabs beat the West Warriors, 61-28 on opening night at Memorial Friday, improving to 1-0 on the season. Calhoun ran a ground-and-pound offense for much of the second half, taking advantage of a handful of key Warrior turnovers as they turned a close game into a blowout.
After Calhoun jumped out in front 14-0 early, West clawed their way back into the contest, feeding All-State running back Tyvon Hardrick with regularity to close the lead to six by halftime.
In half number two, however, two key fumbles did the Warriors in. A muffed punt return deep in their own end set up a Sandcrab score, before another fumble gave way to a Steve Johnson touchdown. Quarterback Conner Kestler put the finishing touches on the big win, taking a 60+ yard keeper to the end zone to extend the lead to 33.
West takes the field next week against San Benito at 7:00 pm. Calhoun holds their home opener against Stafford.
