Business Report: IRS issues identity theft scam warning to businesses

A warning has been issued to companies from the IRS about an identity theft scam.

The IRS is warning companies about an huge increase in email phishing scams that put worker’s social security numbers and other important information in the hands of thieves. The scammers send an email that appears to be from an executive at the company, asking payroll or HR departments to send a list of all employees and their W-2 forms. About 200 businesses, schools and other organizations were victimized during this year’s tax filing season, resulting in the theft of hundreds of thousands of employees’ data.
