Black & White Girls Basketball League Returns

League Shelved Last Year By Harvey Damage

Summer youth girls basketball, returning to Victoria Tuesday night.
I was at the VISD Event Center for the first night of action in the Victoria Black And White girls basketball league. This league started in 1989 and continued through 2017. Then Harvey came along, causing damage to the back gym at the Event Center that was not fixed in time for last summer. After no league hoops last year, the Black And White league is back. There are 22 teams in four divisions, starting from fifth grade up through college age players. I talked with two West girls about what it’s like to be playing summer league ball again.

Said Aaliyah Castillo, “It’s good practice and good experience. You play different people. You work with your team that you’ll play on next year.”

Said Ashley Giesalhart, “It’s really good. I’m glad it’s back. In the past it’s helped me with my game. People around me helped me become a better player.”

The Black And White league playoffs start June 25.
