Big Monday For UHV Golf
Men Lead Tourney, Woman Wins Conference Honor
Victoria, Texas — UHV golf makes big news Monday on both the men’s and women’s sides.
The University of Houston-Victoria men’s golf team took a big step in defending its title at the South Padre Intercollegiate on Monday.
Ryan Morant posted a 2-under par 70 helping the Jaguars to a 22-shot lead after the opening round at the South Padre Golf Club.
The Jaguars posted an opening round 303 score behind a 77 from Juan David Coy, and 78s from Benjamin Lake and James Rollins. Terry Stickland added an 81 for the Jaguars.
Playing as medalist, Corey Rodriguez posted a 2-under 70, while Jacob Flores had a 79 and Adrian Saenz an 84.
Final round play is Tuesday.
University of Houston-Victoria’s Kelly Swanson was named Monday the Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-17.
The freshman from Houston won her first collegiate tournament in a highly competitive field and became the first UHV golfer to win individual honors at the annual UHV Claud Jacobs Collegiate Invitational.
Swanson posted rounds of 75-74-149 at the seventh-annual event to capture individual honors with a two-shot victory over conference foe Emily Hunt of Texas Wesleyan.
The field included No. 8-ranked Texas Wesleyan, along with NCAA Division 3 Southwestern and two ranked junior colleges in Ranger College and Murray State.
Swanson led the field in par-4 scoring with a 4.25 average and in birdies with seven. She tied for first in par-5 scoring with a 4.80 average and tied for sixth in par-3 scoring in the 44-playr field. She also finished 10th in the field with 18 pars.
Swanson leads her team with three top-10 finishes on the season and currently holds an 81.80 scoring average through five events this year.
