HBU senior kickoff returner Gamar Girdy Brito has been selected as the STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in the Huskies’ 53-52 victory over South Dakota Saturday, the organization announced Monday.

In addition, junior quarterback Bailey Zappe earned honorable mention for Offensive Player of the Week, senior defensive end Andre Walker earned honorable mention for Defensive Player of the Week and safety Tra Fluellen earned honorable mention for Freshman of the Week. According to STATS Perform FCS Senior Editor Craig Haley, this is the first time a program has been represented in all four categories.

Head Coach Vic Shealy’s HBU squad was also selected STATS FCS Team of the Week.

Girdy Brito returned seven kickoffs for 249 yards, averaging 35.6 yards per return. His 44-yard return in the second quarter gave the Huskies good field position for their first touchdown drive, then his 76-yard return to the USD 9 set up a short field goal. The Victoria, Texas, native’s case was bolstered by his seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. His 27-yard touchdown put HBU ahead, 45-38, with early in the fourth quarter. Girdy Brito recorded the FCS season highs for kickoff return yards (249) and all-purpose yards (352).

The accolades have rolled in for HBU this week, with Zappe earned Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Walker earning the league’s Defensive Player of the Week and Girdy Brito earning honorable mention as the runner-up for SLC Special Teams Player of the Week. Junior wide receiver Ben Ratzlaff earned Jesse Palmer’s helmet sticker on ESPN’s College Football Final and was named College Sports Madness SLC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Huskies also garnered votes in both national polls for the first time in program history, earning 11 in the AFCA Coaches Poll and four in the STATS FCS Top 25.
