Back to school event raises awareness of bullying

Local man holds back to school event to raise awareness and stop bullying.

Event founder Marcus Resendez is holing the 2nd Annual ‘Stop the Bullying’ back to school event on Saturday, August 12th.

Resendez is the CEO of Supply and Demand Entertainment label.

Last year’s back to school event was themed, Stop the violence, to address the increase of violence in Victoria last year.

Two girls, 14 and 12-years-old, died after jumping from the top level of the Citizens Medical Center parking garage on Red River Street on Thursday, January 12, 2017. Resendez says this encouraged him to focus on the issue of teen bullying in Victoria.

“Our idea is changing the title to match what we feel needs to be addressed the most in Victoria. So this year we went with stop the bullying due to a couple of events that went on their in Victoria,” Resendez said.

Resendez wants to tackle the issue of bullying and give the youth a positive experience before heading back to school.

“I got a couple of phone call about the incident with the young girl on the building and that story hit me hard. With that call and other phone calls I received I felt like this year is about stop the bullying. There’s numerous amounts of stories I’ve heard so I felt this is the right way to channel our event this year,” Resendez said.

Resendez understands the struggle for students to have their basic needs for school like school supplies and backpacks.

“School supplies shouldn’t be an issue for a kid going to school having to worry about them not having what they need. Our goal is to provide the necessities, the backpacks, paper, pens and not let that be a problem for someone getting an education,” Resendez said.

The back to school event will be on Saturday, August 12th from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at Jaycee Hall on 2905 E. North St. Victoria, TX 77901.

There will be music from Supply and Demand Entertainment and P Dollar Sign. The event offers free school supplies, haircuts, moonwalks, food, games, art, face painting and education.

There will be a free shoe raffle every hour.
