Awards For STJ State Volleyball Champs & Cuero Football Star

Major awards for some members of the first St. Joe volleyball team to win state.
Four Lady Flyers, making the TAPPS 5A All-State team. Junior Savannah Wharton, named first team All-State for the third straight year. She is joined on the first team by senior Katherine Terry. Second team All-State picks from St. Joe are sophomore Maiya Tillman and senior Mikah Sloan. Those four Lady Flyers also are first team All-District picks, along with junior Sarah Rosas. Five Lady Flyers make second team All-District. They are Grace Hammack, Rachel Ward, Kyleigh Nethery, Cheyenne Stewart and Cassidy Rather. Another major award for a Cuero football star.
Jordan Whittington, named Built Ford Tough State 4A Player Of The Week. The senior wide receiver and defensive back, a Texas Longhorns signing committment, coming up big in the Gobblers’ district championship game. Whittington caught four passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, and intercepted two passes and returned one 62 yards for another touchdown in a 73-14 win over Wimberley. Whittington is a three-time Max Preps All-America. Cuero takes on Pearsall in the 4A Division II Bi-District playoffs Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.

Elms College sophomore setter Dakota Stewart (Victoria, Texas) earned a spot on the New England Collegiate Conference all-tournament team, the league announced on Sunday.

In two tournament matches, Stewart racked up 84 assists and 31 digs. She averaged 10.8 assists and 3.9 digs per set during the tournament, leading the Blazers to the NECC semifinals. It is the second consecutive all-tournament honor for Stewart, who was the 2017 NECC Tournament MVP after leading the Blazers to the conference title.
