Athletes Of The Week: Industrial Volleyball

Our Athletes Of The Week are the Industrial volleyball team. With a school-best 39 wins this season, Industrial volleyball, already in the Cobra record books. Yet despite the program’s winning culture, the Cobras, still without a trip to state — until now. Their victory over powerhouse Goliad last week, clinching a berth in the state’s final four, and validating years of perseverance in the process. Said senior Maddison Heibel, “Everything we’ve accomplished ever since my freshman year, all these crazy rides we’ve been on, it’s just been so much fun this entire time. And just my senior year to break all these records, and get to make school history basically, is a really big deal.” After falling to Goliad to end their season each of the last four years – including losses in the regional finals in both 2016 and 2017 – the Cobras, finally getting the revenge they so desperately wanted – and worked so hard to exact. Said senior Kylann Griffith, ” It’s awesome to get them back because for as long as I’ve played, it’s been Goliad in the same spot. And it feels awesome that we can do that for our seniors this year.” Said Heibel, “It just feels so good to finally get there and to finally accomplish our goals that we’ve always had. ” The difference this year? A group that’s stayed positive, focused, and tight knit all season. Heibel says they’re not just teammates on the court, they’re best friends off it. It’s a sentiment shared by their head coach, Jenna Buzek. “They all have the same goals, they all have the same wants and dreams and they work really well together. And they have fun while they’re doing it. It’s not too stressful, they all make each other laugh, they have a good time together and that’s a lot of it. You have to have fun, you have to enjoy what you’re doing and this group of girls really gets along very well and they’ve got a great work ethic and that’s what gotten them this far.”
