Athlete Of The Week: Xavier Moore
Our Athlete Of The Week Is Xavier Moore
East boys soccer began their 2020 season with a little bit of history. The Titans, winning the Antler Cup in Kerrville to raise their first trophy in program history — behind a big effort from goalie Xavier Moore.
Said Moore, “It sets a good tone. Mainly because this is the first trophy that we’ve won in East history for soccer. And I think it’s gonna start a great year.”
The junior secured a shootout victory for East in the tournament championship, blocking three penalty kicks to push the Titans past Holmes High School, 5-4.
Said Titan boys soccer head coach Josh Chaput, “The way he just reads it, it’s something that you can’t teach. You can’t coach the kid, you can tell him all you want but he just understands it and he adapts very well to situations.”
It’s the second time in recent memory that Moore’s come up big in a penalty shootout, playing hero in last year’s first round playoff win over Flour Bluff. But he says communication’s been a major focus in trying to eliminate do-or-die situations moving forward.
“A lot of it’s just staying calm and talking more with the defense to prevent draws at the end of the game, to make sure we don’t go to penalties again.”
Chaput contends those experiences, while stressful, have been a key contributor to the goalie’s rise at East.
“You know, the best teacher of the game is the game itself. So the more he played last year, the more and more comfortable he got. Going into this year, he’s just doing his job expecting to play well and knowing he can play well at a high level.”
So far, the team’s faith in Moore is paying off — to the tune of a 4-0 start. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports
