Athlete Of The Week: Vivian Shepherd

Our Athlete Of The Week Is Vivian Shepherd

Our Athlete Of The Week is a repeat winner of this award.

For the first time in VISD swimming history, a girls swimmer will be representing the district at state. Junior Vivian Shepherd, qualifying in both the 200 yard individual medley and 100 yard breaststroke.

Said Shepherd, “It means so much. I put so much work and dedication, and I really had to get motivated this season and I’m so glad it paid off.”

Shepherd’s performance at regionals makes her not only the first female state qualifier for VISD, but their first swimmer outright to qualify in two different events.

“I mean it feels awesome. I’m the first girl and I’m in it it two events. I’m just excited that I finally did it.”

Despite narrowly missing out on state a year ago, Vivian says she’s been able to use that experience to get a leg up in her preparations this time around. But she and her coach know the draw doesn’t get any easier from here.

“I mean last year, I was really nervous and I didn’t know what to expect. So going from knowing what to expect last year, it was easier to go into the meet more prepared, so it was better.”

Said VISD swimming head coach Kathleen Fitzgerald, “It’s gonna be a whole, completely different atmosphere. At regionals it was just her and she was out there ahead of everybody. This next weekend, she’s gonna have to play catch up and push after and catch up to that next person.”

In the end, Vivian says she knows it’s ultimately going to be her against the clock — and doesn’t seem phased by the pressure.

“I’m just gonna go in, give it my all. I’m not really worried about the place, I’m just worried about the times. I just wanna do my best and maybe drop again.”
