Calhoun Soph's Big Season
Port Lavaca, Texas —
Our Athlete Of The Week is Steve Johnson. Into the fourth round of the playoffs for the first time since 2013, Sandcrabs football, generating plenty of buzz these days. With a 286 yard, two touchdown effort in last weekend’s regional game against Kerrville Tivy, running back Steve Johnson is a big reason why. his coach tells us Johnson’s work off the field is paying major dividends.
Says head coach Richard Whitaker, “He works hard in the weight room, and Steve, he also has a speed coach he works with. That’s what it’s about, it’s about strength and speed, and he’s got good size to go with it. As long as you’re preparing your body in the weight room, and preparing it on the track then you’re giving yourself the best opportunity and that’s what Steve does.”
Saturday’s big performance, pushing Johnson’s rushing total over 2000 yards on the season. The sophomore, doing his best to downplay the feat, says he’s just one cog in Calhoun’s offensive machine.
“My linemen, my quarterback they put me in amazing positions. Coach Whitaker always calls good plays order to put me in positions to make plays like that. Linemen execute their blocks, running backs always go out and block them.”
What’s really stood out to Johnson during the Sandcrabs’ playoff run? The team’s traveling support base. He says the Calhoun faithful have reminded the team of their purpose – and exactly who they’re playing for
“Amazing, we have an amazing crowd here in Port Lavaca. I mean, everybody goes out, they travel anywhere they can just to go watch us. It motivates me a lot because then you realize it’s just not about you, you’re representing the community, your families, your coaching staff, everything around you.”
Next time Johnson gets a chance to represent Sandcrab Nation, the lights will be brighter than ever. playing Calallen in the Alamodome, his team will look to keep an already memorable season alive. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports.
