Our Athlete Of The Week Is Rachel Goodwine.

7-0 through three weeks of district play, West volleyball’s got some serious mojo. One of the keys to their early success? Junior Rachel Goodwine, who contributed 13 kills and 14 digs in the Warriors’ latest win against Veterans Memorial. .

Said Goodwine, “I think this year we’ve been very focused. We’ve always worked together on every single game. We’re never looking past games. We’re coming into practice every day doing as much as we can to just prepare for our next game.”

So far, the plan’s working. A three year varsity member, Goodwine’s shared in some of the program’s recent successes, including a co-bi-district championship last year. But she’s hoping the best is still to come.

“This season we really want to go as far as we can. I mean, we’ve been very strong this year, we’re hoping to keep pushing. State’s our goal and that’s where we want to be.”

Warriors head coach Alysia Hill says it’s the way Goodwine lifts those around her that really stands out.

“She comes in wanting to help others and celebrate the successes of others. And I think that’s what a leader does and Rachel’s a phenomenal leader.”

That leadership, a key factor in West’s team success so far in 2019. With a large returning core, Goodwine and Hill both contend those with experience have been expected to step up
Said Goodwine, “We’ve been able to help the whole team. Most of us are upperclassmen so it helps keep us all together, just helps make it stronger.”
Said coach Hill, “Upperclassmen, lowerclassmen, age doesn’t matter when you step on the court. You just want the girls to lead, and be positive leaders for one another, and that’s what the team really strives to do.”
Their next test? A showdown at home against crosstown rival East. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports
