Athlete of the Week-March 8-12
UHV Jaguars baseball pitcher-Christian Garcia
VICTORIA,Texas– This week’s Athlete of the Week is University of Houston-Victoria, baseball right handed pitcher, Christian Garcia.
The junior pitched six shut out innings on Monday when the Jaguars hosted Ottawa University. He threw a total of 62 pitches giving up just five hits, allowing no walks, while striking out two batters. The Jaguars would go on to win the game 1-0.
“Everything led up to me pitching and throwing out the strikes. Our catcher was giving me the signs and I’m the type of player who doesn’t like to shake off anybody so it was more about spotting up. Pitches were moving a lot. Curve ball was breaking, fastball was staying right in the zone so that right there was what led me to my success,” said Garcia.
Garcia started playing baseball at the age of three. Baseball runs in his family as his uncle also played college ball. Garcia has always been around the game and has never played other sports as he was busy focusing on baseball. His favorite pitch to throw is his curve-ball. On the mound, Garcia does his best to block out any distractions and stay focused on the batter and his catcher.
“As a pitcher you’re throwing all kinds of pitches you’re going up against hitters who could possibly be batting 250 or maybe even 400. Some guys are home run hitters, contact hitters, but at the same time, you just gotta focus on you. You have to zone in and just block out everything when you’re on the mound,” continued Garcia.
Garcia knows that he’ll have days where he does good and days where he won’t do good. But he says that he won’t allow those bad performances to bring him down. He looks up to God and his dad as his mentor. One of his favorite athletes is the great Michael Jordan.
Congratulations Christian Garcia on being named this week’s edition of Athlete of the Week.
