Athlete of the Week: March 29-April 2
Athlete of the Week is Shiner golfer Michael Williams
VICTORIA,Texas– Our Athlete of the Week is Shiner Comanches golfer Michael Williams.
Williams, a senior, is currently number one in the 28-2a district. In his most recent tournament at the Weimar Country Club, Williams scored an 89 and not only did he take first place, but Shiner also placed first as a team. Williams took the first place spot on his own with three strokes over the nearest competitor. Williams’ overall lowest score at a tournament was an 84.
“I worked hard for this, it feels good and as a team we won it too so moving on to regionals I hope we could move on to state,” said Williams.
Williams started playing golf in eight grade after seeing Tiger Woods play. If you do the math, that isn’t that long ago and yet he’s accomplished so much. Shiner Comanches golf head coach Randy Palmer says the competitive nature between him and his teammates brings out the best in each one of them. Palmer continued to say that Williams’ demeanor on the course has changed since last year.
“In the past, he’s kind of let one shot affect another. This year he’s done a much better job of moving on to the next shot, not letting one shot affect the next one,” said Palmer.
When I met with Williams for his interview, he just hit off his 8 iron for me. He laughed because he didn’t want to use his driver so he wouldn’t walk over 300 yards to pick up the balls after, and I couldn’t blame him. His favorite golf course to play is at tour 18 in Houston. Williams is heading to Blinn College next year and although he says he will retire from golf, he is looking forward to studying maritime.
Congratulations to Michael Williams on being Athlete of the Week.
