Athlete Of The Week: Kevin Rankin

Our Athlete Of The Week Is Kevin Rankin

With their thrilling overtime win against King on Friday, West basketball’s up to five district wins on the season — and junior Kevin Rankin’s a big reason why.

The Warriors’ high scorer dropped a career-best 37 points in last Tuesday’s win over Carroll, then followed it up with 26 against the Texans.

Said Rankin, “I’m glad my teammates support me shooting the ball as much as I do. But, I mean it opens up my teammates. So in previous, I mean in the games next they’ll be open and they’ll hit big games like that too.”

West’s fast start in district, a far cry from where they were a year ago, when they managed just one district win the entire season. Head coach Pat Erskine believes it’s just a product of his team growing up.

“I think the maturity level has risen from staying focused at practice, staying focused in the game. We’ve communicated with these kids that last year is definitely not going to define who you are.”

According to Erskine, another key has been Rankin’s ability to cut down on low percentage shots. But the sharpshooter says the whole team’s been determined to turn the page on last year’s struggles.

“Last year’s season didn’t sit well with any of us. And ever since day one we’ve been ready to work. And when our football players came in they brought the same energy. And it’s transpired very well.”

Said coach Erskine, “You know, what Kevin’s done this year is he’s gotten to the shots that are better for him. I think last year his shot selection, he wasn’t real sure, this year he’s done a great job finding that shot selection during the game.”

Now 5-3 in district, that’s a formula that’s put these rising Warriors squarely in the playoff picture. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports
