Athlete Of The Week: Kenny Haynes
Our Athlete Of The Week is Kenny Haynes. With their 48-6 drubbing of Jourdanton last weekend, the Edna cowboys, into the regional playoffs for the second consecutive season. And for the second straight year, it was running back Kenny Haynes stealing the show, rushing for 263 yards and five touchdowns in the win. Despite his prowess, Haynes, quick to heap the praise on those around him. “My coaching. My coaching, before the game, they always tell me ‘it’s really another game, but you have to act like it’s something way bigger than that. I gotta give it back again to my offensive line. Them boys can get me going anytime.” For Cowboys fans the past few years, those video game type stat-lines, nothing new. Haynes rushed for over 2100 yards to go along with 32 touchdowns as a junior last season, tallying 1900 more and 29 scores this year. His coach, Jerry Long, says the standout’s continued success is a direct product of his mentality. “Kid loves the game, kid comes to work every day. It’s important to him, you can’t say enough about that. He wants to be successful, he wants this team to be successful, he wants to play at the next level. And so he works that way. ” Yet despite Haynes’ personal accolades, it’s the team’s success that’s on his mind. With a high-stakes matchup against Rice Consolidated coming Friday, Haynes says he wants to avenge last season’s regional loss to Goliad, and get the Cowboys back to a place they’ve been just once in the last 27 years: The fourth round of the playoffs. “It means a lot. But we’ve been preparing ever since last year. Right after we lost that game to Goliad, that Monday we were back in the weight room and he was telling us, ‘this can’t happen again, and it won’t happen again.’ Last year kinda knocked you down a little bit, and made you want to get back on top. So, it’s really motivation. ” As Edna’s high octane offense keeps powering through it’s opponents, Cowboy fans will surely hope that motivation holds true. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports.
