Athlete Of The Week: Karston Wimberly
Our Athlete Of The Week Is Karston Wimberly
Vanderbilt, Texas — 8-1 on the season and undefeated in district, Industrial football’s as sharp as they’ve looked in recent years. One of the big reasons why, quarterback Karston Wimberly, whose strong play led the Cobras to victory in a first place district showdown with Hallettsville last Friday night.
Said head coach Jamie Dixon, “The Hallettsville week, I told them, ‘from here on out, it’s playoff games’. I mean, you had a game last Friday for the district championship. This Friday’s game is so we don’t have to share it with anybody. And then after this it’s playoff time. So the last two weeks, it has been playoff games for us.”
In his third season as the starting QB, Wimberly’s suffered through plenty of lows – going just 2-9 in district the last two seasons. He says it’s made the team’s rise this year that much sweeter.
“It’s been very special for me. The past two years, we haven’t really achieved a whole lot. We’ve gradually gotten better and it’s finally coming together this year. It’s been very special.”
The senior tells me that transitioning into a leadership role is an effort he’s been proud to undertake – and one he hopes has helped the next wave of Cobra talent.
“Most definitely. I pride myself a lot on being able to lead these guys and get these guys going, especially in crucial times. We have a lot of young guys, and they look up to us in ways, and helping them helps us.”
One thing that’s surely helped the Cobras are Wimberly’s legs – he’s rushed for 906 yards and 15 touchdowns this year in nine games under center. The quarterback and coach agree it’s an indispensable part of the offense.
“I love running the ball. I was a running back growing up. And it opens up the pass game whenever the defense has to come up to guard me, for running. It opens the passing game up.”
“Him being able to run has helped, and he does a good job. And it adds an extra dimension. I mean you look at a lot of offenses that are real good, they usually have a quarterback that can run.”
Wimberly and the Cobras will bring those jets with them on the road to Edna this Friday. One win for the outright district championship. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports
