Athlete Of The Week: Jonathon Brooks 11/28

Our Athlete Of The Week Is Jonathon Brooks

Talk about an eye popping stat line. In Hallettsville’s area round win over Jourdanton, running back Jonathon brooks topped 300 yards rushing to go along with four touchdowns. It was the latest performance in a blazing stretch for the Brahmas, winners of nine of their last ten.

Said Brooks, “Communication. And we’re starting to capitalize off of other teams’ mistakes. And lessening our mistakes.”

Brooks’ 319 yard outburst is just another chapter in what’s been a breakout season for the junior. He was named the Built Ford Tough 3A State Player Of The Week in September after the Brahmas’ 67-6 drubbing of Taft, a game in which he rushed for 225 yards, three touchdowns, and returned a 71-yard pick six.

Said head coach Tommy Psencik, “You know, he’s a great athlete to start with. But when you take a great athlete, he works hard, he’s here every day at practice, he’s upbeat all the time. You know, the kids have grown to depend on Jon not only as a ballplayer but as a leader.”

After missing out on the playoffs in 2018, expectations in Hallettsville were tempered entering the season. It’s made the team’s rise to the regional semifinals this year even more satisfying for the Brahmas and their coach.

Said Brooks, “It’s great. Just knowing that our team played together and we won, it feels great.”

Said coach Psencik, “You know we picked ourselves even at fourth or fifth in district. We didn’t know what to expect.”
Now, they find themselves one win away from round four, and a potential rematch with district foe Industrial. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports
