Athlete Of The Week: Hayley Montez

Our Athlete Of The Week Is Hayley Montez

Our Athlete Of The Week is going to her home away from home: The state UIL wrestling tournament.

For the second straight season, East wrestler Hayley Montez is going to state. The junior finished second at last week’s regional meet in Austin to join three other VISD wrestlers at the big event this week in Houston.

“It feels great, cause being in State is one of the best mat times you can get, it’s the best practice you can get. So I feel like wrestling the best of the best, and being able to beat them it really builds up my self-esteem and lets me know I can do better.”

After placing fifth a year ago, Montez says she’s ready to display the hard work she’s put in on the mat over the last twelve months.

“I’m ready this year. Last year I was very nervous, and I was kind of like, ‘I can’t do this, these girls are good.’ And now that I know that I know I’m on the same level, I’m ready to come back and do better than I did last year.”

for VISD wrestling head coach Kerry Iannazzo, who with this latest group has seen his 49th VISD wrestler reach the state meet, it’s a testament to the hard work his kids have put in — and the faith they have in his program.

“I give all the credit the kids because they need to buy into the program. You can lead the horse to water, but if he doesn’t drink what do you do? So, the kids here have bought into the program, they believe in what we do, and they believe in me. And it works, and we keep doing it, and it keeps working each year.”

The VISD wrestling team leaves for Houston’s Berry Center on Thursday. When they return, they will have hope to have added to the 14 state placers in program history. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports.
