Athlete Of The Week: Ethan Adcock
Our Athlete Of The Week Is Ethan Adcock
One VISD wrestler won a district championship last week.
A 2019 state wrestling qualifer, West junior Ethan Adcock’s already made a name for himself at VISD. But this season, Adcock’s still out to prove something — he’s 31-7 overall and was just named 15-5A district champion.
Said Adcock, “Thinking about last year at State, and how I didn’t do as well as I thought I should’ve. And this year I’ve just been putting everything into showing that I deserve to be there, and showing that I’m elite. And, I feel like I need to prove something this year so that’s where all my focus has been.”
Wrestling in the 126-pound weight class, Adcock earned not only the district title, but Lightweight Champion Of The Year honors. With Region IV championships set to begin Friday, VISD’s captain says he’ll draw on the knowledge he earned wrestling at this stage a year ago.
“Right now I feel good, I’m not nervous, I don’t have any pressure on me. I gotta believe in my abilities, which I do, and I should have no problem returning.”
Said VISD wrestling head coach Kerry Iannazzo, “This year, he’ll benefit tremendously from having that experience, plus we went to the Cy-Fair Tournament which had 99 teams. So he’s ready. I’m looking forward to seeing him wrestling not only this week at regionals but next week at state as well.”
Already battle tested against 6A wrestlers at tournaments earlier this season, Adcock’s confidence is real — and so is his hunger to get it done in 2020.
“It’d mean everything, it’s a dream of mine. And it would just prove to myself that I do belong and there would be no better feeling than that.”
To make that a reality, the junior will need to place in the top four at this week’s regionals, then brace for the biggie — next week’s state championships at the Berry Center in Houston. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports
