Athlete of the Week: April 5-9

Athlete of the Week is Hallettsville Lady Brahmas freshman pitcher Kaylie Olivarez

HALLETTSVILLE,Texas– Freshman pitcher Kaylie Olivarez pitched through four innings Tuesday night against district opponent Tidehaven, where she struck out nine batters and went two for two at the plate. The Lady Brahmas would win with a mercy rule as they scored 15 runs finishing the game in just four innings, shutting out Tidehaven 15-0. Olivarez has pitched in 41 innings so far this season, with 71 strikeouts and has a 3.4 era and six wins.

“It’s always important to just focus on the next pitch, so if I mess up on that last pitch I just focus on the next one and make sure to hit my spot,” said Olivarez.

The Lady Brahmas are 14 -4-2 overall and 8-2 in district. Olivarez has a batting average of .542 with 13 hits including a home-run in her 24-plate appearances.

“When you don’t have something go your way, it’s about bouncing back and turning that into a positive. I thought Olivarez did a great job, she hit her spots. When we needed a big pitch she was there to provide it,” said Hallettsville softball head coach Callie Kresta.

As a freshman, Olivarez looks up to her teammates cheer and energy. She said they support her through ups and downs. Olivarez wants to become the same kind of senior to the freshman a few years from now and help them out. Olivarez’s favorite pitch is her change-up and her favorite subject in school is math because she wants to study architecture when she gets to college.

“Anytime we ask her to do something, she’s right there ready to jump in no matter what it is. Whether that’s hitting, pitching, or defense, she’s ready to go at all times. And when she’s not in there, she’s supporting her teammates that are on the field,” continued Kresta.

Olivarez hopes to keep improving to help her team return to Austin for the state championship. The lady Brahmas beat district opponent Rice Lady Bulldogs Friday night in dominant fashion, 18-4.

Congratulations to Kaylie Oliveraz on being named this weeks Athlete of the Week.
