Athlete of the Week: April 19-23

East Titans golfer Emma Koch named Athlete of the Week

VICTORIA,Texas–Our Athlete of the Week this week is East Titans golfer Emma Koch.

Sophomore Koch hit a albatross at the regional tournament on Tuesday. A rarity in golf, that’s six million to one to be exact, yet Koch got to make the shot in front of a crowd. Koch was 171 yards out when it happened so she wasn’t aware that the ball went in the hole but she shares her thoughts during that moment.

“My shot looked really good. But I didn’t think like that good. You know, no one ever thinks that good from that far out. All of a sudden we heard people yelling at the green and clapping and we were like was it close or something and I walk up and one of the coach’s tells me it went in and I was like what?” said Koch.

Koch started golfing at the age of five. She was inspired by her older brothers who were in high school playing golf and she couldn’t wait to have her own clubs one day. Her nickname is “Tin Cup” in reference to the the movie”Tin Cup” because Koch herself takes risks when shooting like she did on Tuesday earning herself the albatross.

Titans girls golf head coach Mike Smith was approaching her to help her pick a club and get the right shot but Koch already had her mind made up.

“She pulls out her seven wood with no hesitation and I started to go over there to say something and she said, coach, I got this. So I stood back and watched the magic happen and everybody up there was just so excited. It was just such a unique situation. There had to be 75 people that witnessed it so it was a great deal,” said Smith.

Smith says that he expects her to be shooting in the low seventies in the coming years. in the meantime Koch is focusing on golf and academics where she has a grade point average over 4.0

Congratulations Emma Koch on not only making an unbelievable shot but also for being named this weeks Athlete of the Week.
