Athlete Of The Week 5-23

Our Athlete Of The Week Is Kenzi Lange

A pair of two run home runs. a series-clinching walkoff hit. With the Lady Brahmas’ season on the line last Saturday, second baseman Kenzi Lange came up large.

Said Lange, “To open up the first inning and, you know, hit a two-run bomb, it kind of just sets the tone for the rest of the game. And I think it really gave my team a lot of confidence, knowing that we could hit their pitcher and score runs off of her.”

And score they did. After dropping game one to Santa Gertrudis, Hallettsville *needed* a Saturday sweep to reach the regional finals. Lange’s two-homer, five RBI effort in game two keyed a 15-0 blowout — and put their only loss of the season to date in the rear view mirror.

Said Lange, “After we got back on Friday night, we just sat down and talked. And we just said we wanted to show all of our fight and all of our heart for our town.”

But even that was just an opening act for Lange’s piece de resistance. With game three tied at eight in the eighth, the junior stepped up to the plate with a chance to send everybody home — then she did.

Said head coach Mike Mikeska, “No (laughs). No, not then. When they decided to walk Riley, and put the winning run on second base. I said, this is the person — with the day she was having — this is the person I would want up there.”

Lange? Well, with the day she was having she’s just grateful the Lions decided to put the bat back in her hands.

“Honestly, it kind of lights me up. You know, it gives me a lot of confidence, knowing that they don’t respect me as much as the person in front of me. I don’t know, it makes me really excited to go up and hit and hit them in.”

Lange and the Lady Brahmas are already up a game in their regional final against Banquete. One more win and they’ll be taking their heroics to Austin. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports
