Air quality report results in closing of middle school

VICTORIA, Texas – An air quality report resulted in the closing of a middle school.

The Stroman Middle School campus will remain closed until additional testing can be done, according to district officials.

As of last week, there were 841 students enrolled at Stroman Middle School.

At the weekly Tuesday morning community partnership meeting, Victoria I.S.D. Superintendent Quintin Shepherd, confirmed the closure was caused by an organic growth that looked different than what they’ve seen in the past.

“We immediately brought in air quality experts to take a look at it,” Shepherd said. “They verbally told us, they thought it was mold so we immediately evacuated the building because the safety of our staff is most important to us. Over the weekend we worked with air quality experts and we confirmed that it’s mold.”

An independent contractor conducted the inspection, said Shepherd.

This report comes months after voters rejected a bond, which would have set plans in place for the complete rebuilding of the campus.

The Victoria I.S.D. Proposition A, which included a $156.8 million dollar facility improvement bond, was voted down with about a 900 vote difference and a voter turnout of 14.6 percent out of a total of 49,286 registered voters.

School district administrators received an Environmental Assessment Report for the campus on Thursday, August 5.

The report included samples taken from the week of July 20, 2021.

The results required an environmental specialist to visit the campus on Sunday, August 8 to procure additional samples.

A treatment plan will be created for the campus.

Stroman Middle School students and staff will start the 2021-2022 school year at the district’s Liberty campus.

“This will not be a long-term solution,” Shepherd said, adding that the independent contractor will issue an official report Friday with a determination and possible solution to remove the mold and make the building safe again, in addition to a price.

Students and staff part of Liberty will start school at the Dr. Robert Jaklich Conference Center, located adjacent to the Liberty campus.

A special Victoria I.S.D. board meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Victoria I.S.D. board trustees will vote on whether or not to call a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE) and a school building bond election.
