A Refugio World War II vet honored in a special way
State Rep. Geanie Morrison helped in the Texas Legislature
REFUGIO, Texas—The bill proposing renaming a stretch of U.S. Highway 77 in honor of a Medal Of Honor recipient from Refugio has been passed into law.
State Representative Geanie Morrison filed the bill that proposed Highway 77 in Refugio County be designated as the second Lieutenant “Pete” Hughes Medal Of Honor Memorial Highway.
Hughes, a 1939 graduate of Refugio High School, was awarded the Medal Of Honor posthumously for his service as a B-24 bomber pilot in World War II. Hughes’ bomber was shot down in 1943 during Operation Tidal Wave near Ploesti, Romania.
This is Representative Morrison’s statement to us about this honor.
“It is never too late to honor a hero. We have received immense support from Refugio to honor 2nd Lt. Lloyd H. ‘Pete’ Hughes and will proudly recognize his sacrifice in Refugio for generations to come. I am thankful for the support of my colleagues and work of the Pete Hughes Memorial Committee to recognize him in this way. We will always honor our heroes in Texas”
