85th annual Calhoun County Fair in Port Lavaca this week

The fair features carnival rides, fair food, and a livestock show and auction

PORT LAVACA, Texas – The 85th annual Calhoun County Fair and Livestock Show & Rodeo is in town this week held in Port Lavaca.

This year’s fair features a variety of activities for fair-goers, from classic fair foods ranging from candy apples to deep-fried Twinkies, a beauty pageant, and carnival games. There is also a petting zoo featuring goats, a camel, a tortoise, and even a few deer, but watch out the deer might nibble on your clothing as they did to third-grader Aria Fleming.

“The animals keep on chewing on my shirt, but besides that, I think it’s pretty fun. I like the camels and the goats and deer and everything, they’re pretty nice. I also like their turtles, but the turtles slow, and so it’s not that great. I love all the people in this world and that’s it,” says Fleming.

Fleming says that her favorite fair food is a snowcone.

The livestock show and livestock auction is a large part of the Calhoun County fair each year with the show starting tomorrow bright and early at 6 a.m. with swine weigh-in, then on Thursday, the livestock auction will take place with the auction registration at 6 p.m. and the auction starting at 6:30 p.m.

There are a variety of carnival rides for all ages, guests can purchase a wristband that will get them on the rides. There are also carnival games with numerous prizes up for grabs.

Rachel Delgado has been going to the fair since she was a child, and it’s not only the events that keep her coming back but the fair foods.

“Corn dog, funnel cake, candy apple…everything,” says Delgado.

The fair also features live music performances on Friday and Saturday, with In Time band and Virginia Valor on Friday, and Hayden Baker and Coffey Anderson on Saturday. The fair will be open until Saturday.

Fair admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and children 5 and under are free. Carnival wristbands to have access to rides are $25 Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and $30 on Saturday.
