2 Gentoo penguins join the Moody Gardens Aquarium

In the spirit of Christmas, there are 2 adorable additions to the South Atlantic exhibit inside of the Aquarium Pyramid at Moody Gardens, Galveston.

GALVESTON, Texas – Moody Gardens Aquarium pyramid now has 2 new Gentoo penguin chicks.

Their aquatic museum of 1.5 million gallons provides a home for many creatures, such as seals, sharks, jellyfish and sea-lions.

Aquarium curator, Diane Olsen, said these new Gentoo penguins are growing really fast.

“So we are so excited to have two new Gentoo chicks on our exhibit. So they’re about a medium sized penguin. They have a white stripe on the top of their head, super energetic. They’re the ones that are bouncing off the ice-flows all the time. So they’re really easy to identify and we’ve actually been very lucky with breeding here. So we’ve had quite a few Gentoo chicks, but every year is still exciting for us,” she said.

According to the aquarium, penguins play an influential role as ambassadors for wildlife conservation. Each successful penguin hatch adds to the Moody Garden’s mission to educate and conserve these animals.

Olsen recognizes this penguin population is expanding because they can sustain warmer temperatures.

“These chicks hatched on the 28th and they are growing remarkably. They were about 170 grams when they hatched and now they’re over 400… so Gentoo populations are one of those few species that are actually expanding, the population is growing. Primarily because the oceans and the climate is warming and so they’re able to move into areas that predominately were too cold earlier,” Olsen said.

Luckily, the current climate change helps Gentoo penguins remain stable in nature.

Yet they are still facing some threats, for example over-fishing and limited resources.

“For Gentoo penguins, things that can threaten these species are over-fishing, over-harvesting of the resources. As well as climate change, though it is helping them in some ways of expanding. If it gets too warm, they’ll have a problem as well. Just as all the other species,” she explained.

Having these penguins at moody gardens in Galveston helps the aquarium educate others about issues that birds face in the wild.
