19 immigrants found dead in 2003 will be honored at memorial Mass

St. Joseph the Worker will also be honored during this Mass

VICTORIA, Texas – On Saturday, May 1, Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church will hold a memorial Mass honoring the 19 immigrants who were found deceased in the back of a tractor-trailer at a Victoria gas station on U.S. 77 back on May 14, 2003.

Our Lady of Sorrows has hosted a memorial Mass every year since the immigrants’ death, excluding last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Saturday, May 1, is also the memorial of St. Joseph the Worker, patron saint of workers and a refugee. The year 2021 is the year of St. Joseph, which is why the Mass will be held on this day. The congregation will honor him by praying for his intercession.

The Mass will be held at the site of the tragedy, Fleming Prairie Road and U.S. 77 (Refugio Highway), at 10 a.m.
