Calhoun County elects first Republican County Judge in more than 20 Years

Posted: Updated:

We saw the results of the GOP dominating in our state, and that was no different for Calhoun County. Only that this change comes after more than 20 years.

“I’m very proud to be the Calhoun County judge, and I  want to do what is best for Calhoun county.” says Richard Meyer, new Calhoun county judge elect. Meyer has made a major change; in 22 years this position has been filled by a democrat, however, election day has proven the change of voting in this county

“I don’t want to say I broke the tradition, but it’s kind of nice. Calhoun county has been going heavy GOP the past several elections, and it went through this year." he adds.

With high voter turnout, Richard Meyer collected 68 percent of the votes, while his opponent, democratic candidate Allen Tippet held on to 32 percent of the votes. A campaign that followed a democratic predecessor, who is set to retire.

“But I  have to say, it was a very clean race, I  want to applaud my opponent for running a very clean race, and it was enjoyable."

A major project Meyer hopes to carry out- more industry to the county's deep water ports- an opportunity he adds can strengthen Calhoun, a job he’s ready to take on.

“A lot of work, looking forward to it, I’ve never backed down from a challenge.” he adds.
