UHV Men's Golf Results & Women's Soccer Awards

A super Tuesday for UHV athletics in two sports. The University of Houston-Victoria men’s golf team failed to make up any ground on Tuesday to finish fourth at the Our Lady of the Lake Saints Classic at The Republic Golf Course.

The Jaguars posted a final round 317 to finish the 54-hole event at 917. Houston St. Thomas, holding the lead after Monday’s opening two rounds, closed with a 307 to capture the event title with a 894.

The Saints turned in the best final round with a 303 to finish second with a 901, while Texas A&M-International posted a 308 to finish third at 902.

Terry Strickland, Benjamin Lake and James Rollins all finished in the top 10 individually tying for ninth at 228. Strickland had rounds of 73-74-81, while Lake posted 75-75-78 and Rollins 74-78-76. Adrian Saenz carded a final round 87 for a 238, while Corey Rodriguez added an 82 for a 252.

Juan David Coy playing as a medalist for the Jaguars finished tied for sixth with a 223 after rounds of 74-76-73. Ryan Morant, also playing as a medalist, placed eighth with a 75-73-77-225.

St. Thomas’ Peter Thorseth claimed individual honors posting a final round 3-under par 68 to finish at 1-under par 212. A&M-International’s Santiago Garcia placed second at 219 with a final round 73.

The tournament was the final fall event for the Jaguars.

The University of Houston-Victoria’s Jurnee Fernandez and Amanda Bautista closed out the year earning recognition at the Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week for the week of Oct. 29-Nov. 4.

Fernandez was named the RRAC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Bautista was named the RRAC Defensive Player of the Week. This is the 11th and final set of conference awards for the 2018 women’s soccer season.

Fernandez helped the Jaguars to a 1-01 week in a pair of contests against LSU-Alexandria. She closed out the Jaguars’ regular season with the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win over LSUA and then hit a crucial penalty kick that kept the Jaguars alive in the RRAC quarterfinal game against LSUA when they game was forced into a PK shootout to see which teams advanced to the RRAC semifinals. On the week, she took six shots, including five shots on goal.

For the season, the senior forward from Fresno, Calif., has scored two goals, while taking 23 shots, including 13 on goal.

Bautista, a junior goalkeeper from Houston, turned in two strong performances in goal by not allowing a goal in 182 minutes. She finished the week with nine saves, while facing 12 shots. She came up with two key saves during the PK Shootout against LSUA in the RRAC quarterfinals match.

On the season, Bautista has recorded 22 saves in six games, while allowing five goals and has a 3-1-1 record in goal.

      It wasn't pretty at times, but the Bulldogs got it done.  Yoakum beat Columbus, 30-13, in Hallettsville on Friday, pulling away in the fourth quarter to punch their ticket to the area round for the second consecutive season.
