UHV Women's Soccer Falls to LSUA in Playoff Opener

ALEXANDRIA, La. – For a team picked to finish last in the preseason Red River Athletic Conference poll, the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars women’s soccer team played with hearts of champions on Saturday in the opening match of the 2018 Raising Cane’s RRAC Soccer Championships. 

In a rematch with the LSUA Generals, the fifth-seeded Jaguars dominated early, but when the dust settled from the battle, the two teams finished regulation and double overtime in a 0-0 draw forcing penalty kicks to decide the match. 

LSUA (8-5-4) earned the right to advance to the conference semifinals with a 5-4 edge in the PK shootout when Nisa Ollivierre’s shot sailed just left of the goal. LSUA advances to Thursday semifinal match against Houston St. Thomas at 11 a.m. and Texas A&M-Texarkana. UHV ends the year with a 7-6-1 record. 

Victoria Smith, Elizabeth Reyes and Jurnee Fernandez each converted their efforts in the PK battle and goalkeeper Amanda Bautista came up with two saves as the two teams finished the first round tied at 3-3 sending the task into sudden death. UHV’s Priscila Cortinas’ shot hit the pole and Sabrina Calderon had a shot go off the crossbar. 

Lauren Leslie answered Zarah Arnaud’s PK in the first sudden death, and after Yesmin Gabino was successful with her try, Ollivierre’s shot sailed just to the left of the post. 

UHV outshot LSUA 17-5 in the match, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Jaguars dominated the first half with an 11-1 edge in shots and a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal, but were unable to find the mark. 

Cortinas paced the Jaguars with five shots, while Fernandez added four, Leslie and Reyes three each, and Elizabeth McDonald and Isabella Strasheim one each. 

Bautista finished with four saves in the contest in goal for the Jaguars.
