Calhoun Football's Win Streak Ends

Posted: Updated:

Calhoun football's seven game winning streak, putting the Sandcrabs in a first place tie in district.
I was at Sandcrab Stadium as Calhoun took on third place Southside. This is what the Sandcrabs do before the last home game every season. They hold hands and walk through the grandstand. The Calhoun crowd gives to them a standing ovation. Southside's first drive would earn a standing ovation from its fans. Sprint draw to Perfecto Doria. This would be almost perfect, a 51 yard gain to the Sandcrab five. A few plays later, from the two, quarterback Alejandro Escamilla, benefitting from the moving pile, into the end zone for the 7-0 Cardinal lead. Calhoun's first play from scrimmage, Southside bunched up at the line, expecting the run. Conner Kestler, of course, throws a pass. Daniel Martinez gets it and he could've run to the Port Lavaca Causeway and no one could have caught him. 77 yards, game tied at seven. Southside answers. Escamilla, rolling out of the pocket, throwing into double coverage. But it's a great pass and a great catch by Michael Hernandez. 13-yard score, Southside, back up 14-7. Calhoun back on offense, knocking on the red zone door. Kestler, switching hands with the ball, loses the football and the Cardinals recover on their own 23 yard line. Southside up 21-7 at halftime, and the Cardinals win big, 50-14, ending the Sandcrabs seven-game winning streak. Calhoun now 5-1 in district, 7-2 overall. The Sandcrabs end district play at Calallen next Friday night.

The Bobcats' offense looks like it can't be stopped. Refugio defeated Yorktown 75-0 in Karnes City on Friday, marking the sixth straight week the team has eclipsed the 55-point threshold. The Bobcats have posted 75 points or more three times during that stretch.  Refugio dominated from start to finish in the 2A division I bi-district, scoring 42 unanswered points in the first half to put the game out of reach early.  Next up for the Bobcats will be an area round clash aga...

Industrial football, looking to make as long a run as its volleyball team did in the playoffs. Our David Gibson, at Ricebird stadium for the Cobras and Rice Consolidated, 3a division one bi-district. First play of the game Rice's Devin Sims takes the hand off and runs for a big gain before being tackled.  On the same drive the Raiders running back takes the ball and barrels his way all the way down to the 2 yard line.

    • Yoakum Pulls Away Late, Beats Columbus

It wasn't pretty at times, but the Bulldogs got it done.  Yoakum beat Columbus, 30-13, in Hallettsville on Friday, pulling away in the fourth quarter to punch their ticket to the area round for the second consecutive season. After a pair of costly first half turnovers, Yoakum tightened up their play and held the Cardinals scoreless in the second half in front of a friendly crowd.  After scoring on their first possession of the game, the Bulldogs ran into trouble after quar...
