UHV Soccer Sweeps A&M-Texarkana

UHV soccer gets big home away from home conference wins Thursday.

The University of Houston-Victoria men's soccer team moved a step closer to its second straight Red River Athletic Conference regular season title with a 3-0 win over the Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles on Tuesday.

 

The Jaguars improve to 9-1-1 on the year and 8-0-1 in conference, while the Eagles fell to 1-12-1 overall and 1-8-1 in conference.

 

Connagh Wilks (SO/Egham, England) put the Jaguars up in the 21st minute with a goal off a corner kick from Brody Patience (JR/Douglas, Isle of Man).

 

Alex Pugh (FR/Croydon, Surrey, England) then added a header off a cross from Burabari Nalelo (SO/Katy, TX) in the 48th minute and Jean Bosco Irumva (FR/Dallas, TX) finished the scoring on an unassisted goal in the 86th minute.

 

UHV controlled the game out shooting the Eagles 20-4, including a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal.

 

Pugh and Nahom Abebe (FR/Dallas, TX) paced the Jaguars with three shots each, while Mohammed Ibrahim (JR/Ridgeland, MS), Gian Marco Zancanaro (SR/Bassano del Grappa, Italy), Daniel Gribben (SO/Glasgow, Scotland), Jose Munoz (SR/Houston, TX) and Wilkes had two each.

 

Palemon Plancarte (SR/Houston, TX) was in goal for the Jaguars' fourth straight shutout and finished with three saves.

 

The Jaguars return to action Saturday hosting Wiley College in an 8 p.m. match back at the Round Rock Multisports Complex.

The University of Houston-Victoria women's soccer team kept its Red River Athletic Conference tournament hopes alive Thursday with a 3-1 win over the Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles at the Round Rock Multisports Complex.

 

The Jaguars improve to 5-6 overall and 5-4 in conference and into a three-way tie for fifth place. The Eagles fell to 4-12 overall and 4-6 in conference.

 

The Eagles scored first and took a 1-0 halftime lead on a header from Emilee Bybee off a cross from Alexandra Martinez in the 29th minute.

 

UHV controlled the second half tying the game on an Elizabeth Reyes (FR/Edinburg, TX) penalty kick in the 49th minute.

 

Reyes would strike again in the 51st minute with a goal off a corner kick from Lauren Leslie (SR/Falkirk, Scotland). Reyes now has a team-high nine goals on the season, while Leslie is one assist shy of the all-time women's assist record of 17 at UHV.

 

Jurnee Fernandez (SR/Fresno, CA) added an insurance goal in the 85th minute off a free kick.

 

UHV outshot the Eagles 12-11 and held a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.

 

Reyes led the Jaguars with five shots, while Leslie added four and Fernandez 3.Amanda Bautista (JR/Houston, TX) was in goal for the Jaguars and had three saves.

 

The Jaguars will return to Round Rock on Saturday to host the Wiley Wildcats in a 6 p.m. match. The game had to be moved because of wet field conditions.
