Athlete Of The Week: Eric Acosta

Posted: Updated:

Our Athlete Of The Week is Eric Acosta. At an age when most of his classmates are learning long division, 10-year old Eric Acosta is already a national champion. The youth fighter out of Victoria's Two Countries boxing club recently returned from USA Boxing's Eastern Elite qualifier in Chattanooga, Tennessee, taking first place in the 75 pound weight division. Acosta says he's just trying to have fun.  "Just go out there and have fun, try and win every single fight. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win but it's alright, you gotta feel like you're still a champion." With a 4-1 decision in the championship fight last Thursday, Acosta, realizing a dream he's been working towards for six years. When the fifth grader returned to class at Dudley Elementary, he was met with a hero's welcome. "Yeah, I told them today. They were like, 'good job, you won for us', and all that. I won it for Dudley and Victoria " His father Ramon, who also happens to be his coach, says he's proud his son is so eager to represent the city. "I'm very proud of him, and he's very dedicated. He wants to represent Victoria and the state of Texas in Nationals. And I hope he wins again because he's gonna start training harder.." If his track record is any indicator, you could be hearing from this young boxer again very soon. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports.

Team USA fell short of advancing to the next round on the first day of boxing at the Summer Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018.

Light welterweight Otha Jones III (Toledo, Ohio) was the first American to step into the ring. Jones could not take the judges cards over Hassan Azim of Great Britain in a 4-1 decision outcome. Jones will have one more opportunity to advance to semifinals if he wins today over Russian Ilia Popov, the 2018 Youth World Championships silver medalist.

Featherweight Roma Martinez (Houston, Texas) could not overcome 2018 Youth World Championship competitor Dearbhal Roone of Ireland to continue her run at these Youth Olympics.

The final member of Team USA competing at these Youth Olympics, Heaven Garcia (El Monte, Calif.), will step into the ring this evening against Kazakhstan’s Zhansaya Abdraimova. This will mark the third time these two have met in the ring and the second in 2018. Garcia took a split decision victory in the semifinals of this year’s Youth World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

This year’s Youth Olympics features 82 boxers from around the road looking to win gold. The American team is being led by Junior and Youth National Team Coach Augie Sanchez (Las Vegas, Nev.).
