UHV Golf Plays In S.A.

Posted: Updated:

UHV golf has a hot day on a chilly Tuesday in S.A.

On a cold, wet day, the University of Houston-Victoria men's golf team fought off challenges from seven NCAA Division III schools on Tuesday to capture the team title at the Trinity University Alamo City Classic at the Quarry Golf Club.

Adrian Saenz (SR/Brownsville, TX) and Benjamin Lake led the charge for the Jaguars, the lone NAIA team in the field, as the two UHV golfers finished in a six-way tie to help the Jaguars post a 305 score in the 18-hole tournament. Rain forced the cancellation of Monday's opening round.

Concordia University-Texas finished three shots back of UHV with a 308, with the University of Dallas following in third place at 310. Host Trinity posted a 311, while Texas Lutheran, Schreiner and Le Tourneau all posted 318 scores and Hardin-Simmons came in with a 321.

Saenz and Lake each posted 75s to finish three shots back of individual leader Luke smith of Hardin-Simmons who finished with a 1-over par 72. University of Dallas' Thomas Schuberg finished second with a 73.

Behind Saenz and Lake for the Jaguars, James Rollins (JR/Liberty Hill, TX) posted a 77 to tie for 10th, while Juan David Coy (SR/Bucaramanga, Colombia) added a 78 and Terry Strickland (JR/Missouri City, TX) an 88.

The Jaguars will return to San Antonio on Nov. 5-6 to compete in their final fall event, the Our Lady of the Lake Saints Classic.

Battling brutal playing conditions Tuesday, the University of Houston-Victoria women's golf team turned in a fourth-place finish at the Trinity Alamo Classic at the Quarry Golf Club.

Heavy rains washed out Monday's opening round, and changed the tournament to a one-day, 18-hole tournament.

The Jaguars survived the brutal cold, wet conditions to post a 381 score to finish fourth ahead of Schreiner University and Texas Lutheran University. Concordia University-Texas claimed the team title with a 337, while Hardin-Simmons University finished second at 341 and Trinity University was third at 346.

Jocelyn Villafranca (SO/Cuero, TX) paced the Jaguars with a 91 and finished tied for 13th overall. Kelly Swanson (FR/Houston, TX) carded a 92to finish 16th for the Jaguars, while Mary Kate Krueger (SO/Cuero, TX) and Victoria Garcia (SO/Brownsville, TX) each posted scores of 99. Jo Ellen Canales (SR/Corpus Christi, TX) carded a 110 to round out the UHV scoring.

CUA's McKaela Lauritsen claimed the individual title with an 80, while Trinity's Emilee Strausburg was second with an 81.

The Jaguars return right back to action on to wrap up their fall schedule at the Tyler JC Fall Invitational on Oct. 22-23.
