Texas Catholic Dioceses Set to Release Information on Sexual Abuse Allegations

Posted: Updated:

With a recent rise of sexual abuse allegations in the Catholic Church, the 15 Catholic Diocese in Texas have agreed to release names of clergy who have credible allegations of sexual abuse to minors.

Texas Catholic Dioceses is following the footsteps of other cities and states nationwide in releasing this type of information. But aside from becoming more transparent, the Catholic Church hopes to be apart of a healing process.

“A goal, we can do it together, and just commit that we’ll release the names of the credible allegations” says Bishop Cayhill.

There are about 4000 clergy members in Texas which will now be a state that as a whole will release names of those accused of sexual abuse towards minors.

“We thought about our response to the ongoing questions of sexual abuse to minors by clergy- so one of the things we decided to do together, each diocese reveal all our files going back to 1950”

This decision was made on September 30th at an annual Texas Bishops meeting. The rise of allegations this past year has applied pressure for action from the church.

“we always want to  keep our eyes on Jesus on Christ and preaching his mission- and going from that we consider, well what is the best way for us to offer healing and the restoration of trust”

8.5 million people practice the Catholic faith in Texas, and the Catholic Dioceses of Victoria oversees 10 counties and over 50 parishes and missions. And by January 31st, 2019 the names of any accused will be available.

“It seems extremely important and listening to people- that really is our commitment is that this action is a sign of hope and possibility of healing.
