Sen. Huffines calls for emergency hearing on election security

Posted: Updated:

DALLAS – In response to troubling allegations of illegal voting by non-citizens and officials' failure to adequately respond, Senator Don Huffines is calling for an emergency hearing of the Senate Select Committee on Election Security so Senators can explore the facts, ascertain why existing state laws are not being enforced, and get on-the record answers for voters and taxpayers.

The scale of this issue could be significant, which is why it warrants further exploration.

Senator Huffines stated, "Voter registration & voting by non-citizens is illegal and unacceptable. It casts doubt on our system of elections and causes voters to question whether their vote is counted as they intend it, without being canceled out by an illegal vote. Voters deserve answers now, yet election officials' silence is deafening."

The scale of this problem could be massive. Grassroots leaders claim that more than 4 million registered voters' identifications cannot be verified by the Department of Public Safety's records, and their research also showed that 280,000 registered voters were not citizens at the time DPS issued them an identification card.

Senator Huffines is calling on the committee to explore and verify those claims.

In a letter to the Select Committee's Chairman, Senator Bryan Hughes, Senator Huffines writes:

"I respectfully request that you call a hearing of the Senate Select Committee on Election Security to specifically examine voter registration and voting by non-citizens…. State and county election administrators should be compelled to answer questions on the record and under oath…. The failure to prosecute illegal voting is just as troubling as the failure to enforce state law that limits the right to vote to U.S. citizens only. I would hope that Dallas' District Attorney, Faith Johnson, would attend and participate in the hearing, as well."

In response to an April 23 letter from Senator Huffines, the Dallas County Elections Administrator promptly reported that from 2011 to present, 174 voter registrations were canceled due to non-citizenship.

Of those 174 voters, 22 non-citizens cast ballots in 38 elections from March of 1988 to November of 2016.

Senator Huffines has posed follow-up questions that have not yet been answered.

Senator Huffines concluded, "The numbers of non-citizens registering to vote and casting ballots is disturbing, and so is the uncertainty. Election administrators and prosecutors need to give voters straight answers and honest information immediately, and a Senate Select Committee hearing will give them that opportunity to set the record straight."
