VISD Forms Task Forces to Review School Calendar

Posted: Updated:

Victoria ISD Superintendent Dr. Quintin Shepherd is beginning to take action on some of the insights from Listening & Learning Tour.

Based on the results of the Thought Exchange survey last month and numerous listening sessions throughout the community, two task forces will be created. They will be tasked with evaluating the school calendar, length of school day, and exploring options for the advisory period at the high schools.

A representative from each VISD campus will work together to study the length of the school day and the school calendar.

The result will maximize instructional time for students, while providing staff with the necessary professional development.

They will explore ways to maximize our resources to encourage student attendance, behavior, and most importantly – achievement.

The High School Task Force on Advisory will specifically examine the advisory period within the schedule and weigh possible alternatives to the current schedules.

The length and structure of the school day schedule was one of the top five topics to emerge from the Thought Exchange survey, across all demographic groups (students, parents, staff and community).

The work by these focus groups will allow VISD to move forward on our path of continuous improvement. The task forces will have a final draft of the proposed plans by late January, for consideration by the Board of Trustees in February.
