UHV Fall Golf Classic to Begin Monday

Posted: Updated:

At least one new winner will be crowned this year at the sixth annual UHV Fall Golf Classic.

The University of Houston-Victoria men’s and women’s golf teams will open the season on Monday and Tuesday hosting their annual fall event which was cancelled last year due to Hurricane Harvey.

Both teams hope to be able to make some noise at this year’s event when the women tee off at The Club at Colony Creek and the men at Victoria Country Club on Monday. Seven teams will vie for the men’s title, while six will be trying to win the women’s event.

St. Thomas is the defending women’s champion, claiming the title in 2016, but will not be in this year’s field. Looking to unseat St. Thomas will be host UHV, along with Texas A&M-International, Jacksonville College, Oklahoma Wesleyan, Schreiner University and Tyler Junior College.

UHV is the only team in the field to have won the fall classic claiming the title in 2013 and 2014.

Representing the Jaguars at this year’s tournament will be Kelly Swanson, Jocelyn Villafranca, Mary Kate Krueger, Jo Ellen Canales and Victoria Garcia. Viviana Puente will be playing as an individual for the Jaguars.

On the men’s side, Our Lady of the Lake is back to defend its title from 2016 when they beat out St. Thomas, the defending champion, by 26 shots.

Both OLLU and St. Thomas will be in the field along with Texas A&M-International, Jacksonville College, Tyler Junior College, and UHV. Concordia-Texas will be bringing several individuals to compete in the tournament.

Representing UHV on the first team will be Juan David Coy, James Rollins, Ryan Morant, Adrian Saenz and Terry Strickland. The UHV B-team will be comprised of Preston Woodard, Ben Lake, Joey Hunter, Jacob Flores and Aaron Martinez, while Corey Rodriguez, Paul Ferrette and Nick Cantwell will play as medalists.
