Area H.S. Football Teams In State AP Polls

The outcomes of two big area high school football games we covered on Friday Football Fever, shaking up the AP state polls Monday.
After losing at Yoakum, Cuero drops from fourth in the state 4A poll, out of the top ten, to number 11. On the flip side, the Bulldogs move back into the state 3A top ten at number ten with the win. Goliad, after a 35-0 win at Refugio last Friday night, stays at number four in the  3A rankings. Refugio, on the other hand, falls from number one in the state 2A poll down to sixth. Shiner moves up a spot in that poll to number three.

Here is The Associated Press high school poll, with first-place votes in parentheses, records, points based on 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1, and the team's ranking in last week's poll:

    • Gymagic Girls Finish Fourth in Synchronized Trampoline

      A pair of area gymnasts keep making serious waves overseas. Krista McNary and Brooke Warzecha finished fourth in the world in the synchronized trampoline at the World Age Group Games in St. Petersburg, Russia this weekend. The two youth gymasts out of Victoria Gymagic had previously finished 15th and 22nd, respectively, in the individual trampoline earlier in the week.  The St. Petersburg games mark the second consecutive year that McNary and Warzecha have competed in the World...
    • West Girls' Basketball Finishes Third in McAllen Tournament

      The West girls' basketball team continued its strong start to the season this weekend, finishing third out of 52 total teams at the McAllen Varsity Tournament. After falling to San Antonio Clark to start play on Saturday, the Warriors rallied in their second contest, defeated Harlingen High School, 76-42, to clinch the third spot behind 23 points from Kennedy Youngblood.     • Refugio Drubs Yorktown, Advances to Area Round

      The Bobcats' offense looks like it can't be stopped. Refugio defeated Yorktown 75-0 in Karnes City on Friday, marking the sixth straight week the team has eclipsed the 55-point threshold. The Bobcats have posted 75 points or more three times during that stretch.  Refugio dominated from start to finish in the 2A division I bi-district, scoring 42 unanswered points in the first half to put the game out of reach early.  Next up for the Bobcats will be an area round clash aga...
    • Industrial takes on Rice Consolidated

      Industrial football, looking to make as long a run as its volleyball team did in the playoffs. Our David Gibson, at Ricebird stadium for the Cobras and Rice Consolidated, 3a division one bi-district. First play of the game Rice's Devin Sims takes the hand off and runs for a big gain before being tackled.  On the same drive the Raiders running back takes the ball and barrels his way all the way down to the 2 yard line.

    • Yoakum Pulls Away Late, Beats Columbus

      It wasn't pretty at times, but the Bulldogs got it done.  Yoakum beat Columbus, 30-13, in Hallettsville on Friday, pulling away in the fourth quarter to punch their ticket to the area round for the second consecutive season.
