Operation Firefighter raises funds for families in need

Posted: Updated:

The Victoria Apartment Association, Victoria County Fire Marshal's Office and the Victoria County Fire Department held a garage sale this weekend to raise funds for families in need this upcoming holiday season.

Each year the Victoria Apartment Association, Fire Marshal's Office and Fire Department collect donations and hold garage sales in order to buy new toys, clothes, food and a Christmas dinner to apartment families in need.

The Association Executive of the Victoria Apartment Association and Interim President of the Victoria County Fire Department Toni Stithem looks forward to Operation Firefighter each year.

"I know we go into the houses and there's a lot of tears, a lot of hugs going around. It's just something that makes you feel good. It makes you appreciate what you have when you go into a house that has nothing. They open their cabinets and there's no food. They open the refrigerator and there's no food. It makes you appreciate what you do have when you get back home. And, it's our way of giving back to the community." Stithem said.

The families are nominated by apartment managers and maintenance. During the Christmas season, a firefighter dressed as Santa along with his elves will deliver the presents and dinner in firetrucks to the apartment complex.

"Every little bit helps. Every $5 to $10 is a toy and we give each child five toys, so every $25 is a child we can help," Stithem said.

Two more garage sales are planned for the first weekend of October and November. Stithem plans to place collection boxes for garage sale donations throughout the community during the upcoming weeks. They are also accepting sponsorships and monetary donations.
